Course Offerings

 

Debbie Arechiga is a nationally recognized literacy trainer. She offers trainings in the Four Blocks/Building Blocks Literacy Model (Cunningham & Hall, 1990) and is equally skilled in literacy development based on the five elements recognized by the National Reading Panel (phonemic awareness, phonics instruction, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension). Schools or districts can contact Debbie to schedule the trainings listed here. Debbie can also provide a wide range of customized trainings to meet the needs of a school or district.

             Building Blocks “Plus” Training 
                         (kindergarten/preschool)

(4-day training -- 2 days in fall, 2 days second semester)

Providing the Building Blocks of Success by understanding the “how, what, and why” of effective literacy instruction...

 This training is beyond the basic Building Blocks including information about brain-based learning, strategies for teaching phonemic awareness (specifically, blending and segmenting), alphabetic principle, shared reading, writing and transition tips that engage all learners with multi-sensory experiences, and LOTS MORE! Teachers will learn about developmentally appropriate practices for kindergarten classrooms and pre-school programs that integrate with and support the Four Blocks framework and the Five Elements in the No Child Left Behind Act.

 

                  First Grade Four Blocks “Plus” Training

(2-day training)

Understanding the “how,” “what,” and “why” of effective literacy instruction...

This training goes beyond the basics to give participants an in-depth look at all four blocks. In Guided Reading instruction, Debbie will share examples of lessons using basal materials and more. Teachers will learn how to support emergent readers in the fall of first grade. In the Working With Words Block, teachers will learn several strategies showing how to get the most out of their words block while learning how to incorporate the current strategies for setting up the Self-directed Reading Block in the fall. She will also share several strategies to approach teaching writing during the Writing Block.

 

                   Four Blocks and ELL

(2-day training)

Using the Four Blocks comprehensive literacy framework, this training will provide participants with the knowledge and ability to use effective sheltering strategies and scaffolding techniques to support the second language learner. Teachers who use sheltering strategies offer multiple pathways for students to demonstrate their understanding of the content across all Four Blocks. Come and learn what it means to make our content comprehensible for all learners!

 

              TOOLS for Literacy

(30-hour training)

This introductory course addresses reading development for the primary level student learning to read in a second language. Topics include: phonemic awareness, language acquisition and speech development, phonics and spelling instruction.

 

              TOOLS Plus Literacy

(12-hour training – 2 days)

This follow up course to TOOLS for Literacy addresses reading development for the primary level student learning to read in a second language. Topics include: fluency, vocabulary and comprehension instruction.

 

              TOOLS for Understanding

(12-hour training – 2 days)

This training for upper grade teachers (Grades 3-8) addresses research-based practices for teaching comprehension, vocabulary and word study.

At the end of the course, teachers will be able to:

Understand the demands of academic language proficiency and its relationship to literacy development in the upper grades.

●Provide sheltered instruction that maximizes comprehensible input for all learners.

●Implement a repertoire of research-based strategies for building vocabulary and concept development.

●Implement a model for teaching explicit comprehension strategies that fully engage all readers.

●Implement research-based strategies for teaching word study and spelling.
